Cerro Negro is an active 726 meter (2382 feets) volcano located in the northwestern department of Leon. It is one of the youngest volcanoes in the world. After heavy rains collapsed its main crater, its most recent eruption in 1999 opened up three new craters at its base. Its pitch black, loose gravel cone has made it an ideal site for sand boarding with custom-made “sandboards” or sleds. Not to mention the spectacular view of the Maribios volcanic range nearby.
Despite its low altitude, it’s a fairly steep climb up the top of the volcano. Be sure to bring plenty of water, a cap and generously applied sun bloc. The 500 meters ride to the bottom on an even steeper slope is quite an adrenaline fix. Not to worry. You will be accompanied by certified guides and wear protective equipment to insure that your adrenaline rush does not conflict with your safety.
