Solentiname is an archipelago of 36 islands located on the southeast end of Lake Nicaragua. Like many other places in Nicaragua, the name is derived from a nahault term that means a “place with many guests”. In addition to its lush beauty of jungle draped islands surrounded by crystalline water, the place is also renowned for the beautiful wood carvings produced by a local craft community. In addition to local craft elaboration, locals mostly live off of farming and fishing. In the 1970s Ernesto Cardenal, Nicaragua’s foremost contemporary poet, founded a contemplative community that reinterpreted biblical scriptures from the local’s experience. This community would later be destroyed by the National Guard. Nevertheless, this unique experience altered the course of local history.
Nowadays, the island’s lush natural beauty combined with a unique artistic and historical heritage makes it a must-see place to go.
