The Ruins of “León Viejo” is an archeological site and park of the original town of Leon founded by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Hernandez de Córdoba. This town used to be the economic capital of the colony until its inhabitants abandoned it in 1610 for fear of the constantly erupting Momotombo volcano nearby. The town inhabitants relocated 30 kilometers west to where the current city of Leon is located. Archaeological excavations began recently in 1999. In 2000, Leon Viejo was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The park is well maintained and a guide will explain the colonial history behind the ruins of old buildings. After a visit to old León, you’ll have a chance to see the actual city of Leon and indulge in its rich colonial architecture and history.
