The Somoto Canyon (“El Cañón de Somoto”) is a 3.0 km (1.9 Mille) long gorge where the Rio Coco is born. The canyon, which was recently discovered in 2003 by two European scientists, is one of the geological marvels of Nicaragua. Visitors have different route options, though in all likelihood you will probably need to dip in the river. Depending on your fitness level, you have options for longer or shorter tours. The canyon is just 15 km away from the town of Somoto, famous for its’ rosquillas (doughnuts), a native snack made out of corn. Visitors to Somoto can go see how rosquillas are made in one of the factories in town.
